In an effort to allow the Transition, a road-able aircraft, to continue its development, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted Terrafugia special exemptions, according to the Wall Street Journal.This is the first time a combined flying-driving vehicle has received special consideration from the Department of Transportation since the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards were established in the 1970s. It is unclear what the rates for auto insurance and aircraft insurance will be, or if they might be combined.What are the exemptions?These special circumstances, which are limited to vehicles that drive and fly, will allow the Transition to use plastic windows instead of standard automotive safety glass.

A New York, N.Y.-based insurance and financial services organization said it will open a global casualty insurance practice that will provide underwriting leadership for its general casualty insurance offerings.
Starr Cos. new practice will operate its casualty insurance, available through Starr’s global profit centers and businesses.
Jim Vendetti, executive vice president and chief underwriting officer for Starr Indemnity & Liability Co. and Starr Surplus Lines Insurance Co., will serve as global head of the unit and continue in his current role leading all underwriting for the domestic insurance companies.
James Dowd will report to Vendetti and provide oversight outside the United States. H

Richmond, Va.-based Markel Corp. is acquiring Thompson Insurance Enterprises, which operates as THOMCO, a privately held program administrator underwriting multi-line, industry-focused insurance programs.
Based in Kennesaw, Ga., THOMCO manages more than 20 national programs, including those serving medical transportation, senior living, childcare centers, fitness centers, pest control operators, tanning salons and inflatable rental operators.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
THOMCO expects to underwrite in excess of $170 million in gross written premium for the year, using a network of 4,500 producers and 108 employees.

It’s quite common for my clients to come into an appointment thinking that vomiting is normal in their cats. NEW DELHI| HYDERABAD: The government has allowed Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group firm Reliance Life Insurance to sell 26% stake to Japan’s largest life insurer Nippon Life Insurance. But it has asked the insurance regulator to frame a common policy before approving the deal, a source familiar with the development told ET. The deal, announced in March, is worth $680 million.
This means Nippon Life valued Reliance Life Insurance at $2.6 billion. The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA ) had sought government approval for the Reliance-Nippon deal as it did not satisfy conditions prescribed under Section 6AA of the Insurance Act of 1938.
